Description

In this second volume devoted to the exciting games Souls and Bloodborne, we invite you to continue exploring their cryptic stories, to deepen the study of their aesthetic approaches and their playful philosophy. Bloodborne and Dark Souls III are both different and complementary. What they reveal to us from From Software's creations, from Miyazaki's approach, but also from the video game market and the nature of the medium is proving to be most rewarding.

This book is written with love and appreciation for these games. But it isn't through rose-colored glasses that the authors approach them; they write soberly, with deliberation and respectful analysis. It's an absolute delight to read this book from start to finish, as though you are a tourist in the very worlds the games take place in, and you have a dedicated and passionate guide to inform your observations. Great attention and detail are afforded to several aspects of each game, from things are grandiose as overarching themes to subjects as technical as the musical scoring. For me, the most interesting coverage is the history and the behind-the-scenes information. Little of it was new, but the information had been gleaned over several years from interviews and bits here and there; here, it is all laid out in a neatly organized history for the reader to absorb. But perhaps the most useful and fruitful sections of the book are those dedicated to analyzing the incredibly complex but insurmountably rich lore the games have to offer. Any SoulsBorne enthusiast is likely to be aware of most if not all the information and analyses conveyed here, but the authors write with such clarity that it almost feels like hearing these stories for the first time.Any SoulsBorne fan who appreciates these games will undoubtedly enjoy reading this book. It's accessible, packed with valuable information, very well paced and organized, and written with captivating fervor. I had read the previous volume centered around Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls II, and I was heavily anticipating this follow-up. I wasn't disappointed and the wait was worth it to go through these games on a guided tour by authors who appreciate and respect Miyazaki's creations as much I do.
