Description

Out of all the mysterious boarders who call Sanctuary home, no one is more antisocial or withdrawn than Maxis Drago. But then, it's hard to blend in with the modern world when you have a fifty foot wingspan. Centuries ago, he was cursed by an enemy who swore to see him fall. An enemy who took everything from him and left him forever secluded. But Fate is a bitch, with a wicked sense of humor. And when she throws old enemies together and threatens the wife he thought had died centuries ago, he comes back with a vengeance. Modern day New Orleans has become a battleground for the oldest of evils. And two dragons will hold the line, or go down in flames.

Fans of this series will know the origins of the Were-Hunter race; how a King mourning the loss of his beloved queen and worried that his sons would die in the same manner; merged their souls with different animals in order to prolong their lives. One son merged with a dragon and created the Drakos shape-shifter race, but has anyone ever wondered who that original dragon was and what happened to him?Maxis is content to remain in Sanctuary; in fact he's never set foot outside the building. He's kept his past hidden, yet his bag of secrets is ripped right open when his estranged wife turns up and reveals a secret of her own. Old friends may now want to rip his head off, but they'll help him prevent the end of the world first.Maxis is a fabulous hero. Others may consider him nothing more than an animal (his wife Seraphina included); plus who he is and the actions he took millennia earlier put him firmly on top of the Were-Hunter kill list, but as the plot unfolds the reader learns just how wonderful he is. Seraphina is a little more difficult to rave about. An elite Amazonian warrior, she lets the prejudices and spite of her tribe sway her feelings for Maxis. She treated him appallingly in the past, but again as the story line progresses and she accepts what Maxis is and what he means to her, she proves an admirable partner.Action, quips, wow moments and a plot that never takes a breather; however there is a formulaic flavor (but then this is book 26). What continues to drive this series are the characters and the pairing of leading lovers, plus some intriguing twists that take the plot forwards in unexpected ways. Yes, the tortured/bitter leading lovers will initially hate each other and end up acknowledging their feelings whilst saving mankind or a pantheon of Gods from another demonic/mad God plot, but I still find this series entertaining. Another small gripe; Maxis' full abilities are alluded to but you rarely get to see him in full dragon action. Instead the scene changes to something else, and when Maxis re-appears; usually with a severed head, the plot moves on and you don't really know what he just faced
